CES 2019: The Most Exciting Announcements in Camera Tech
Every year, around 200,000 people make their way to Las Vegas, Nevada to show off and check out the latest innovations in consumer electronics at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Here were some of our favorite camera products that were showcased at CES 2019:
Kodak Smile
The new Smile line from Kodak is a mash-up of nostalgia and modern mobility. The new designs are reminiscent of ‘90s Kodak and cater to current society’s comfort with having their tech right in their pocket or purse.
The Smile line includes a fairly compact instant print digital camera, a retro-style instant print digital camera with a pop-up viewfinder, and a portable instant digital printer that prints from your iOS or Android device via an app.
The line owes a lot to the Kodak Printomatic and the Polaroid Snap, but we like these new iterations and we’re pretty into the portable printer — it’s just more in tune with today’s pacing and the accessibility we’re accustomed to than a trip to the store to pick up your photo prints.
Through the Kodak mobile app, you can also associate a video with your physical images so that when you hover over the images, a video will appear on your smartphone. It’s one of the more clever ways we’ve seen AR implemented on a camera.
Canon Vixia G50
Canon announced the Vixia G50, the first 4K camcorder in the Vixia G line. Cannon’s new camcorder shoots in 4K at 30 fps. This is a prosumer product aimed at advanced amateur filmmakers, student programs, and freelance videographers.
The specs on the Vixia G50 include a 20x zoom lens along with a ½.3-inch sensor, slow and fast motion recording, image stabilization, as well as built-in Dual Pixel CMOS AF.
This new 4K shooter is likely going to find a home with many film students and event videographers in the coming year.
Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S Lens
Nikon announced the first ever 14mm filter-attachable wide-angle lens. In fact, until now, the widest a user could shoot with a Z-Series lens was 24mm with the 24-70mm lens. The NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S lens is just 3.5” when retracted and weighs 1.07 pounds, making it great for travel and landscape photographer. Even better is that the front lens is flat and is compatible with 82mm polarizers and filters.
